Margin

Margin is the deposit your broker locks to open a position. This calculator shows the required margin for a given lot size, price and leverage, plus the full position value.

Rates for pegged currencies are fixed. Edit the rate for others.

Margin

Money set aside to open a position at a given leverage.

Required margin (USD)–
Position value (USD)–

How to use it

  1. Enter the lot size and the current price of the pair.
  2. Enter the leverage your account uses, for example 100 for 1:100.
  3. Read the required margin and the total exposure of the trade.

Questions, answered plainly.

What happens if my margin runs out?

The broker issues a margin call and, at its stop-out level, closes positions automatically. See the leverage and margin guide.

Is higher leverage better?

No. Higher leverage lowers the margin needed but makes a small price move hit your account harder. Risk is decided by lot size, not leverage.

Does the contract size change?

For forex it is 100,000 units per lot. For gold it is 100 ounces, for silver 5,000 ounces; edit the field for those.
