You can open a forex account with 10 dollars. But to trade properly, a beginner needs a few hundred dollars.

Why the broker minimum is not enough

Brokers advertise tiny minimums to get sign-ups. A 10-dollar account leaves no room.

  • One trade at 0.01 lot with a 30-pip stop risks 3 dollars.
  • That is 30 percent of the account.
  • Two losses in a row and half your money is gone.

Good traders lose five or six trades in a row sometimes. Your account must survive that.

How to work out your number

Start from your risk rule, not your hopes. Most experienced traders risk about 1 percent per trade.

Minimum account = (stop in pips × pip value of the smallest lot) × 100

Example: your stops are about 30 pips. The smallest lot is 0.01. That is 0.10 dollars per pip on EUR/USD. So one trade risks 3 dollars. For that to be 1 percent, you need 300 dollars.

Remember the other costs too. Spread on every trade. Swap if you hold overnight on a standard account. Deposit and withdrawal fees.

What each amount lets you do

DepositLot at 1 percent risk, 30-pip stopGood for
100 dollars0.01 (that is 3 percent risk)Learning with real feelings
300 to 500 dollars0.01 to 0.02Following signals with a 1 percent rule
1,000 to 2,000 dollars0.03 to 0.07A few trades at once and a losing streak
5,000 dollars and up0.15 and upReal money per trade, still not a salary

These are examples, not promises. A small account is tuition, not income.

Example

Nadia deposits 500 dollars. Her rule is 1 percent, so 5 dollars per trade.

  • A signal says buy GBP/USD. The stop is 40 pips.
  • 5 dollars ÷ 40 pips = about 0.01 lot.
  • The trade loses. She is down 4 dollars.
  • She takes the next trade at the same size. No panic.

With 50 dollars, the same trade would risk 8 percent. A few losses would feel like a disaster.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Depositing the minimum, then trading mini lots on it.
  • Trading money needed for rent or school fees.
  • Adding money after a loss to “get back to even”.
  • Picking a broker for its bonus. Bonuses come with conditions.
  • Skipping the demo account.

Only trade money you could lose without it changing your week. Next, read the lot sizes guide to match your deposit to your trade size.
